Rev. Malcolm McLeod Bullock

Rev. Malcolm McLeod Bullock passed away on June 19, 2024. He was born on September 16, 1930 as the youngest of 15 siblings who grew up on a farm in Robeson County. Malcolm was the son of the late Albert Rowland and Katie McLeod Bullock. He was a graduate of Fairmont High School, Presbyterian College, Columbia Theological Seminary, and Taipei Language Institute. He served pastorates in Gaffney, South Carolina (Beech Street), Augusta, Georgia (Cliffwood), and Atlanta, Georgia (Lakewood). In 1963, he and his wife Sally and their then-three children, all under the age of 3, traveled to Taiwan, serving as evangelistic missionaries for four years under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Board of World Missions. Even after his foreign missions ended, he remained fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Later, he held pastorates in Woodleaf (Unity), Huntersville (Hopewell), and Salisbury (Thyatira) and as Associate Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, where he retired in 1996. Following retirement he served as interim minister at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, Salisbury; Unity Presbyterian Church, Woodleaf; and First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury. He served on numerous boards including the Lees-McRae College Advisory Board, Montreat College Advisory Board, serving as both president and secretary, Salisbury-Rowan YMCA board, Domiciliary Home Health Care board, the Avena Health Care board and was president of Salisbury Ministerial Association. He was also an officer (Vice President) of Rowan Cooperative Christian Ministry at the time of its transition to Rowan Helping Ministries. Malcolm was also an active member of the Civitan Club of Salisbury for many years. In 1994, he received the state of North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Malcolm was an avid reader whose interests ranged from C.S. Lewis to mysteries. He did extensive research in church and family history and enjoyed frequent walks with Sally and swimming at the YMCA. A lover of music, Malcolm played piano, and sang in both college and seminary choirs. During those years he was a piano accompanist for Chapel services. More recently he played hymns for the Everyman’s Bible Class of First Presbyterian Church and at Trinity Oaks. He loved to travel and visited twenty countries on both mission trips and vacations. Malcolm loved people. Long after his retirement he stayed in touch with past congregations and continued to pastor through phone calls and cards. He delighted in his grandchildren and loved hearing about their activities and their lives. His love of people and family was exceeded only by that of his deep and abiding love of the Lord, which he lived out through daily prayer and Bible study. Malcolm was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sally Bullock. He is survived by wife, Peggy Maness Bullock and his children Harriett Phillips (Todd) of Concord, John Bullock (Patty) of High Point, James Bullock of Charlotte, Stephen Bullock (Andrea) of Salisbury, and Susan Brittain (Michael) of Cary; eleven grandchildren; Phillip Bullock, Andrew Bullock, Paul Bullock, McLeod Phillips, Jack Phillips, Anna Blair Bullock Izzard, Thomas Bullock, Katie Bullock, Laura Bullock, Emily Brittain, Jonathan Brittain, and two great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by brothers Joseph A. (Henrietta), James Roy (Mary), Robert Carson (Clarice), Wayne McAdoo (Eunice), Braxton (Mary), Paul (Kitty Sue), and A.R. (Mary); and sisters Blanche Stephens (Gregory), Margaret McRackan (Walter), Lillian Floyd (Fred), Flora Davis Singletary (Richard and Howard), Hilda Bullock, Flora Neal Bullock and Catherine Wilson (Parks). A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury NC on Sunday June 30th, 2:00 PM with reception to follow in Lewis Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, North Carolina, marked Malcolm Bullock World Mission Project.
