Mrs. Laura Simons Newman

Mrs. Laura Simons Newman, age 96, of Salisbury, NC passed away November 26, 2015 at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks. Born November 21, 1919 in Charleston, SC to the late John Thompson Simons and Ada Jenkins Simons, she attended school in Marion, SC. Mrs. Newman was employed by the Rowan Public Library for a number of years. Mrs. Newman was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she served as President of the Episcopal Church Women and on the Altar Guild. She was also Past President of the Meals on Wheels program, member of the Water Works Art Gallery, the Rowan Art Guild, and served as a tour guide for the Historic Foundation. Preceding her in death on January 20, 2008 was her husband, Orland Maynard Newman. Surviving are two sons, Harold B. Newman and wife Gloria of Madison, NC and Maynard S. Newman and wife Joan of Orpington, Kent England, seven grandchildren: Jean Davidson and husband Mike of Raleigh, NC; Jane Newman-Ford and husband Mike of Shawnee, Kansas; John Newman and wife Robyn of Knoxville, TN; Jim Newman and wife Chris of Lake Villa, IL; Jonathan Newman of Orpington, Kent England; Judith Grahame and husband Nick of Orpington, Kent England, and Anna Carey and husband Benjamin of Orpington, Kent England; and ten great-grandchildren: Morgan and Katie Davidson; Skyler Ford, Tony, Miguel and Christina Parrilla, Owen and Wyatt Newman and Noah and Lucy Grahame. The family will receive friends Saturday (Dec 5) at 1 PM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by The Reverend Robert Black. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park. The Newman family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Myron Goodman and wife, Mary, the entire staff at Trinity Oaks, and the Hospice team for the love and care shown Mrs. Newman during her declining health.
