Kenneth "Kenno" Shoaf

Kenneth “Kenno” Shoaf, 69, passed away peacefully at his home on May 14, 2026. Born on January 15, 1957, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Jim and Vera Mae Shoaf. Kenno was a graduate of West Rowan High School in 1975. He was a lifelong member of the community who will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, and dedication to those he loved. Kenno faithfully worked for 38 years before retiring from the Salisbury YMCA, where he helped with after-school programs, coached teams, and built lasting friendships, while touching the lives of many through his years of service. He was known at the YMCA and throughout the community for his humor, kindness and the way he made others feel welcome. Kenno was a kid at heart who loved planning games and activities such as scavenger hunts and never passed up a game of Connect Four. He was a devoted Tar Heel fan and enjoyed cheering on the University of North Carolina. Kenno was a proud Mason and a devoted member of the Fulton #99 Masonic Lodge. He was also an active Shriner, belonging to the Oasis Shriners and the Rowan County Shrine Club. He greatly valued the fellowship, friendships, and charitable work these organizations represented and was honored to support their mission to help children and families in need. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vera Mae Shoaf, his father, Jim Shoaf; his sister-in-law, Jean Shoaf; and his niece, Angie Shoaf. Those left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Jimmy Shoaf Jr. and Donnie Shoaf (June); his sister, Kay Hager (Tony Sr.); nephews, Tony Hager Jr. (Betsy), Heath Hager (Julie), Jimmie Shoaf III (Jennifer), Eric Trexler and Alan Trexler; niece, Tonya Barber (Jason); great-nephews, Ben Hager, Chase Shoaf, and Shane Barber; great-nieces, Sidney Hager, Eden Hager, Kaitlyn Sells (Lee), McKenzie Shoaf, and Paige Brber; as well as many cousins and extended family members. Kenno was a part of the “Old Fart” group, a group of men from the YMCA who were close friends and shared laughter, jokes and compassion over the years. The family would like to thank his caregivers for the love, support and care they provided to Kenno. Kenno will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever remain in the heart of those he loved. A graveside service will be held at 12 pm Tuesday, 9May 19) at Rowan Memorial Park.
