Kathleen Powell Young

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Kathleen Powell Young, our loving and devoted mother. She went with the angels peacefully to her eternal home on March 19, 2025, while being wonderfully cared for at the Hospice House in Salisbury, NC at the age of 95 years old. She was born December 22, 1929 in Efland, NC then later the Powell family moved to Salisbury NC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Wilton E. Young. She was affectionally known as “Kat”, a shining light to all who truly knew her. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God. She worshipped our Lord at Park Avenue Methodist Church, where she raised her 4 children to be Christians. Later, she praised the Lord at Liberty Community Church where she met so many wonderful people. Some of her greatest joy came from her children, Donna (David Weaver), Robert (Andrea), Doug (Kay) and Loretta (Rick Bogle); her grandchildren, Matt Weaver, Katie Weaver Macomber, Ty Young, Nicole Young Fries, Laura Bogle, Anna Bogle Sellers, Dale Bogle, Craig Hamilton and Stephen Wood; her great-grandchildren, Noah Weaver, Finn and Ian Macomber, Lola and Avery Fries, Ellie Freeze, Levi and Waylon Bogle, Jaxson Sellers, Brooke H. Mullins and Kasey Wood, and her Great-great grandchildren; Emma Kay and Beckett Mullins. She also has a surviving sister, Jan Trexler; sisters-in-law, Nancy Powell and Jenny Powell; and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Kat worked at Leisure Lads, NC Finishing Company, Rowan Community Service Council and Merita Thrift Store. She loved helping others, visiting shut-ins, and driving friends to and from doctor appointments when they were unable to do so. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Methodist Women’s Missionary Group. It is an award for outstanding outreach and volunteering to help so many people. Visiting Lake Junaluska with her church friends gave her much happiness. Her favorite pastimes were drinking Diet Cheerwine and eating popcorn while watching the Atlanta Braves (the food supposedly helped them win). She also loved going to American Legion games with her sisters, Dot and Nancy. You could really make her day by giving her homemade ice cream or watermelon, her favorite foods. In the past year, she looked forward to playing Bingo with roommate, Mary Deal, and other friends at Trinity Oaks Skilled Nursing. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by this wonderful, sweet lady. We invite you to join us to celebrate her life on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Summersett Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 1:00PM-2:00PM at Summersett Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Cemetery. We ask that you remember her not as her life ended but for the way it was lived and for the significant impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of truly knowing this disciple of Christ.
