John Potts Davis, Jr.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Potts Davis, Jr. announces his passing on September 16, 2017 surrounded by his wife and children at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center. He was born April 8, 1939 in Mobile, Alabama to the late John Potts Davis and Ethel Irene Davis. He is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Louise. At a young age, John moved with his family to Salisbury, NC where he was raised and graduated from Boyden High School in 1957. After high school, he attended college at the University of Alabama. A life- long Crimson Tide football fan, John often delighted in sharing a 'Roll Tide' with friends and family during football season. John loved his country. He served in the US Army from 1962 to 1965 where he was chosen for overseas assignment serving as a radio operator as part of the United States Army Security Agency. Later in life, John also served 2 years as a Petty Officer in the US Navy Reserves. Recently, he was chosen to be a participant in the Freedom Honor Flight program. Upon returning from active duty service, John followed in his father's footsteps by beginning his career in retail management with FW Woolworth Co. His management career spanned 40 years with him ultimately retiring from Family Dollar in 2007. After retirement, he enjoyed being a member of Davidson United Methodist Church, attending Boyden High Class of '57 events and spending time with his many dear friends. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sandra Davis; sons, Todd Seckler of Sugar Hill, GA; David Seckler of Cornelius, NC and grandchildren Garrett Seckler and Gavin Seckler; and son, John Potts Davis III of Marietta, GA and wife Allegra, with grandchildren Kira Davis, Connor Davis and Cooper Davis; sister-in-law Charlotte Henson of Ormond Beach, FL and husband Ed Henson; and 6 wonderful nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 pm on Monday, September 25, 2017 at Summersett Funeral Home, 1315 West Innes Street, Salisbury, NC. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 2 pm at the Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd. Salisbury, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Davidson United Methodist Church, 1233 South Main Street, Davidson, NC 28036 or any charity of the donor's choice.
