Janet Frye Rhodes

Janet Frye Rhodes left this earth to join Herb, her husband of 59 years on March 28, 2017 at Autumn Care of Salisbury. Janet was the firstborn daughter of the late Joseph H. Frye and Katie Lee Maness Frye. Other deceased family members include her brother, Joseph H. Frye, Jr. and nephews: Joey Frye and Jimmy Trexler. Among surviving family members are her children: Michael Wayne Rhodes of Cornelius, NC, Linda Susan Rhodes Deas of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Barbara Rhodes Key of Chester, VA. Also surviving is her sister, Shirley Frye Trexler (Jim) and their son, Pastor Timothy Scott Trexler of Shelby and his wife, Lisa and their daughter, Kari Willis (Andy) and son Timothy James (TJ); and her brother Rusty Frye and his wife Sharon of Rancho Santa Fe, CA and their sons Paul Brian Frye and Danny Frye. There are seven grandchildren: Camille Lesley Key, Cynthia Diane Key, Stephen Deas (Bo), Catherine Collin Deas, Calvin Harrison Deas, Madison Lee Rhodes, and Megan Michelle Rhodes and niece, Kim Miller. Janet was valedictorian of Rockwell High School in 1954. She graduated from Catawba College in 1958. Herb also attended Catawba College and Janet assisted him in attending UNC-Chapel Hill for Master’s and Advanced Degrees. Then Janet attended UNC-Chapel Hill for her Master’s Degree. Janet taught at East Rowan High School beginning the first year it was built for three years; Northwest Cabarrus County for one year; South Rowan High School for three years; Boyden High School for three years and the remainder of her teaching career at North Rowan High School for 20 years. Mrs. Rhodes was a member of First United Church of Christ of Salisbury and has long been active in the work of the church. The family will receive friends Friday (Mar. 31) from 11 AM-12 PM at First United Church of Christ. The funeral will follow at noon at the church with Pastor Carol Hallman of First United Church of Christ and Pastor Tim Trexler of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. A private burial will be held at Rowan Memorial Park beside her beloved husband, Herbert Calvin Rhodes. Memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ, 207 W.
