Grace Crowell Phifer, age 82, formerly of Matthews, NC, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 after transitioning to the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, NC. She was most recently a resident of Brookdale Lexington assisted living community. Grace was a native of Charlotte, NC and was the daughter of the late Mariechen Shaw Crowell and Frank Herron Crowell. She was a graduate of Central High School, Kings Business College and attended Central Piedmont Community College. She was employed for many years at Myers Park Baptist Church, retiring in 1997 as Executive Assistant to the Senior Minister. Grace was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church where she served on the Board of Trustees, the altar committee, the worship committee, was a Stephen Minister, a member of the joy class and a member of the chancel choir. She had a kind and gentle spirit and was loved by all who knew her. She was a tireless servant and was happiest when she was helping others. She loved her family more than anything. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. Grace is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William J. Phifer, III (Chip) and Helen Winston Phifer of Winston-Salem, NC; her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Phifer Fazia (Betsy) and Dr. Robert Brian Fazia of Salisbury, NC; six grandchildren, Megan Phifer and Rachel Phifer of Winston-Salem, NC, William Phifer of Wilmington, NC, Amanda Fazia McMillan and husband Corey McMillan of Cary, NC, Grace Fazia of Raleigh, NC, Wesley Fazia and wife Madison Fazia of Knoxville, TN; and three great-granddaughters, Isabelle McMillan, Katherine McMillan and Parker Grace Fazia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Joseph Phifer, Jr. (Bill) and her sister, Betty Crowell Edwards of Belmont, NC. A memorial service for Grace and a celebration of life for both Grace and Bill will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 2:00 pm at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road Charlotte, NC. The service will be conducted by Reverend Joseph Aldrich and Reverend Dr. John Blizzard. The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45 pm in the church’s narthex. A private burial will follow the service at Sharon Memorial Park for the family. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Lexington and the staff of the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House for the love and care they gave to Grace. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Stephen United Methodist Church; Loaves and Fishes ministry (648-B Griffith Road, Charlotte, NC 28217); or the Glenn A.
