Gary Whitten Black

Gary Whitten Black, 63, of Salisbury NC, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Atrium Health Cabarrus surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on March 27, 1958, in Knox County, Tennessee, the son of the late Albert Whitten Black and Betty Annora Black. Gary was a Veteran of the US Navy; he served aboard the submarine USS Cincinnati (SSN 693) and is a plank holder of the submarine USS Buffalo (SSN 715). In 1985 he set roots down in Salisbury, NC where he met his wife Lisa and built his family. A 2013 retiree of Philip Morris USA, he continued his career at Henkel Corporation in Salisbury. Gary was a faithful servant of the Lord who loved his country and his family. He was an avid reader who enjoyed traveling and visiting Disney World with his family where they created a lifetime of memories. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Lisa Martin Black; sons, Stephen Lee Black (Nicky), Alexander Whitten Black (Kristin) and Nicholas Daniel Black all of Salisbury; mother, Betty Carli (Jim) of Salisbury; brother, Jack Black (Rick Partridge) of Nevada City, CA; sister, Rebecca Carli of Davidson, NC; and four grandchildren; Lucy, Caden, Thomas, and Penelope Black. His memory will be cherished by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. A Graveside will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at 9:00 am at the Salisbury National Cemetery. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, conducted by Rev. Laura Musser Gritter and Dr. Randy Kirby. The family will receive friends following the service. The Black family wishes to thank the healthcare teams who provided care for Gary throughout his battle with cancer.
