July 23, 1931 - January 9, 2022
On January 9, 2022, our mother, Elizabeth Robinson McCombs Glover passed away at Brighton Gardens Memory Care in Raleigh, NC with her children at her side. Elizabeth (Lib) was born July 23, 1931 in Gaston County, NC to the late James J. Robinson and the late Chloe Miller Robinson of Hickory, NC. Mrs. Glover was a graduate of Hickory High School and Lenoir Rhyne College where she earned her B.A. in Early Education. She received her MA in Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and taught school for 34 years. She retired from the Rowan County School System. Lib was preceded in death by her first husband, The Rev. Charles A. McCombs as well as her second husband, Francis C. Glover, and her sister, Ethel Balch. Elizabeth is survived by her three children: Nora Winchester (Alan) of Brevard, NC; Connie Batchelder (Craig) of Wilmington, NC; and Charles A. McCombs, Jr. (Teresa) of Aikens, SC. She is also survived by her sisters, Joyce Kirkpatrick (Don) of Granite Falls, NC and Barbara Humburg (Lowell) of Merritt Island, FL. Elizabeth was the grandmother of ten grandchildren: Becky Elizabeth Simmons, Walker Winchester, Dylan Brown, Zan Batchelder, Jon Marc Winchester, Hannah Hudson, Bret Batchelder, trey McCombs, Braden McCombs, and Wesley Batchelder and the great-grandmother of: Avery Winchester, Kennedy Winchester, and Margaret Mae Brown. Elizabeth was an active church member at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Wilmington, NC and Bethel Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. At each of these churches, she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, Catechism, Vacation Bible School and was a Stephen’s Minister. She was a member of the Women of LCA and ELCA. Lib was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority, the Extension Homemakers of Salisbury and the Singing Seniors of Salisbury. Our mother loved collecting dolls, especially Madame Alexander dolls; her home in Salisbury was filled with over 400 of these dolls tastefully displayed. She loved traveling and visited many countries throughout her lifetime. She took joy spreading the Gospel. While in her seventies she spent a summer in China teaching Christianity under the pretense of teaching English to University students. She also spent another summer in the remote areas of Alaska teaching Bible school to native children while living in a hut, sleeping on a mattress pad on the floor. Elizabeth never met a stranger and loved everyone she met. She instilled the Word of God to her children and grandchildren throughout her life. “Gram” as she was called by her grandchildren taught each of them to read before they began kindergarten. This led them to their love of reading which they still practice today. Elizabeth will be greatly missed by all her knew her. Services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Rd, Salisbury, NC on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow the service in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lenoir Rhyne University Attn: The Rev. Charles A. and Elizabeth McCombs Scholarship, 625 7th Ave, NE, Hickory, NC 28601 or Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 East Ridge Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.
