July 3, 1939 - May 12, 2021
Cleveland Lipe Barrier, Jr. 81, of Saliisbury, passed away in peace to his eternal home on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at the Novant Health Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House after a long illness. Lipe was born on July 3, 1939 in Mt. Pleasant, NC, the firstborn child of C. Lipe Barrier, Sr. and Evelyn Blackwelder Barrier. Lipe had five younger siblings. They grew up on a large family farm. Lipe graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1957 and received a degree from NC State University in 1961. He began a career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in September 1961 in Yadkinville, NC, transferring to Tarboro, NC in 1963, to Monroe, NC as District Conservationist in 1966 to 1976 and Salisbury District Conservationist. Lipe retired as a Federal employee in Rowan County, NC in 1994. He did contract work for SCS in Statesville, NC and N. Wilkesboro, NC after his retirement. In Union County, Monroe, NC Lipe was the Soil Conservation Representative in building the Cane Creek Watershed Lake. No-Till farming was of special interest to Lipe and he supervised SCS directions for no-till farming in Rowan County. Having been raised on a farm, hard work was a natural for Lipe. He loved the outdoors and anything connected to farming and technical support for farmers. At a farm banquet held annually in Rowan County, he showed slides of area farms and the conservation work completed on them and pointed out “this picture does my heart good!”. When traveling, Lipe’s favorite highlight was “checking out the crops on the way”. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1989 from the SCS for outstanding contributions. A man of few words, Lipe was a thinker and planner with unusual patience, common sense and judgement. Lipe and Renda have been active members of Milford Hills United Methodist Church and the Crosstalk Sunday School Class for 44 years. Lipe served as a Trustee for eight years. He worked approximately 20 years as leader of BBQ cooking for the church fund raiser. Mr. Barrier was preceded in death by his parents, C. Lipe Barrier, Sr. and Evelyn Blackwelder Barrier, having followed up on their care in their later years. Two sisters preceded him in death, Reba Shue of Inman, SC in 2010 and Cynthia Barrier of Winston-Salem, NC in 2020. He is survived by his cherished wife, Renda Treece Barrier and his caring son, David M. Barrier and wife April Perrell Barrier of Salisbury; and two grandchildren, Taylor McKenzie Bell and husband Frankie Bell and Mason Cole Barrier. Watching Mason grow from birth to 14 years old was a treat. Mason loved his papaw time. He is also survived by a sister, Sharon Barrier of Harrisburg, NC; brothers, Michael Barrier and Daniel Barrier of Mt. Pleasant, NC; brothers-in-law, Archie Shue of Inman, SC and Curtis Treece of Mt. Holly, NC; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2021 in the Church fellowship hall of Milford Hills United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jim Parsons officiating. Memorials may be made to the Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Cheer Givers, 1630 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Barrier family.
