Mrs V. Ann Smith Poplin

Mrs. V. Ann Smith Poplin, 68, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. She was born on March 19, 1947, in Washington, NC to the late Cassie Lee Clark and Plymouth Franklin Clark. One of Ann’s greatest pleasures was cooking for her family and friends which started at a young age in her Grandma Bettie’s kitchen. Ann’s dream of opening her own restaurant became a reality with Ann’s Kitchen in Spencer, NC. She served home cooked country dishes and desserts until closing in 2005. After her restaurant closed, Ann focused on taking care of her grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren immensely and was an active participant in their care from the time they were born. “Nana” always looked forward to meeting them at the bus after school and taking them places like the movie theater or skating rink. Ann enjoyed getting together with her friends monthly to play canasta. She was a member of two canasta groups, one of which played together for over thirty years. She was always involved in some kind of home improvement project at the various properties she owned. Another hobby included frittering – going in search of antiques and bric-a-brac at various stores and auctions. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Victor “Buddy” Poplin, Sr., daughter Shannon Taylor and her husband Steve of Concord, NC and grandchildren Ean and Makayla; brother David Clark and his wife Kay and brother Wayne Clark and his wife Gail. Step children include Victor Poplin, Jr., Angie Trexler and her husband Richmond, Ashley Lanning and her husband Jarrod. She is also survived by grandchildren Mia and Morgan Trexler and Andrew and Micah Lanning. The family will have a celebration of her life on Saturday, December 5 at 11:00am at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Salisbury where she was a member. The service will be conducted by Rev. Bill Ketchie and Pastor Jarrod Lanning. Following the service, lunch will be provided by Emmanuel Baptist Church. Ann had an AVM all of her life that was not diagnosed until 2005 and she suffered several hemorrhagic strokes due to this condition.
