Stanley Joseph Mieszkiewicz

Stanley Joseph Mieszkiewicz, 94, of Autumn Care of Salisbury passed away Friday, January 15, 2010. Born April 28, 1915, in Brooklyn, New York, Stan was the son of the late Albert and Julia Mieszkiewicz. He was educated in St. Anthony’s Catholic Schools in Brooklyn and attended Ohio State University. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he worked for Veterans Administration Medical Centers his entire career and was instrumental in opening hospitals in Beckley West Virginia; Dublin, Georgia; and the current Salisbury facility, The W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center. He retired in 1973 as Salisbury’s Chief Fiscal Officer where he had received many outstanding service awards. Mr. Mieszkiewicz was active in the Salisbury Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Catawba College Chief’s Club. He was an avid golfer and talented woodworker. He was adored by his family and a living example of the inherent good in people. Mr. Mieszkiewics was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Salisbury. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Betty, to whom he was married 62 years and two sisters, Lou and Jean Herman of New York. Left to cherish his memory in Salisbury are his Daughter, Sally Taylor and husband Gary, three granddaughters Ashlee Dangerfield and husband James, Natalee Taylor, and Julie Spitzer and husband Drew of Richmond, VA along with five great grandchildren Jordan, Lilly, Reilly, Ellie, and Andrew. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends who were a source of all his love and pride. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jason Connelly of Rowan Family Physicians, Glenn Terry, Director of Autumn Care of Salisbury, nurses Rita Dyson, Sharon Taylor, Ron Kostas, and many other kind and compassionate caregivers to our loved one. Visitation: the family will see friends at 10 AM in the library of St. John’s Lutheran Church located in the education building. Funeral service will be held 11 AM Wednesday January 20 at St John’s Lutheran Church Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rhodes Woolly; burial will follow at the National Cemetery of Salisbury at the W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church and the St. John’s future Youth and Community Outreach Center 200 W.
