Raymond David Snider, Sr.

The family is saddened to announce that Raymond David Snider, Sr., 73 of Spencer died on Monday, March 26, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem from complications following hip surgery. Raymond was born as a pre-war baby on February 13, 1939, he was the son of Hazel Brattain Snider of Spencer and the late R. C. Snider. Raymond was dedicated to the true stuff of life, his family. He was a life long resident of Rowan County and is survived by his wife, Prudence Payne Snider; son, David Snider and wife Jennifer and grandchild, Megan Johnston and her son Mason Johnston; son, Brent Snider and girlfriend Brandi Sanders, grandchildren Lindsey and Nathan Snider and Brandi’s children Charleigh Miller and Shawn Miller; brother, Jerry Snider and wife Kathy of Chanhassen, MN and nephews, Andy, Travis and Alex; sister, Janice Snider Harris and husband Doug of Greensboro and niece and nephews Joanna, Nick and Josh. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Patrick Snider on July 23, 2010. Always, Raymond was the rock of stability the family relied upon, particularly in Patrick Snider’s recent struggle with cancer and death, a fight which the entire communities of Spencer and Salisbury joined on Patrick’s behalf. All had their lives and personalities greatly shaped by Raymond’s wonderful sense of humor and enthralling stories and his great sense of family. For many years Raymond always cooked Christmas barbeque using techniques learned when he worked as a teenager at Wink’s Barbeque in Spencer. Later he served in the National Guard and later still spent his career at the W. G. Hefner VA Medical Center where he worked as the head of Canteen Services and won awards for his outstanding management. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM – Wednesday at the Summersett Funeral Home and from 11-12:00 PM at Oakdale Baptist Church. The family will be at the residence at other times. Funeral services will be conducted 12 Noon, Thursday (March 29) at Oakdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Gross, officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery. The legacy of Raymond’s strength – and the grace of God – will get us through the present grief.
