Odin Baer Dougherty

Odin Baer Dougherty passed away on the evening of Wednesday April 29th, 2015 in his parents’ arms after an 18-month battle with DIPG. Born May 28th, 2011, he was 3 years 11 months old. Odin is survived by his mother Erin B. Dougherty, father Colin M. Dougherty, and little sister, Scotland Dougherty, all of Salisbury, North Carolina; Grandparents Patrick and Cindy Dougherty of Madison, Georgia, Grandmother Gayle Lyons of Suffield, Connecticut, and Grandfather Gregory Davis of Wilton, Maine. He also leaves behind best pals Emmaline, Micah, and Vivian, numerous Aunts and Uncles, and countless friends, young and old. His brief but amazing life was shaped by a personality that was quiet, thoughtful and kind, yet still passionate and unflinchingly brave. A boy with large warm brown eyes, “Bear” loved books, music, dancing, superheroes, and ice cream. He loved to wake his sister up from her naps with hugs and kisses, to chase Daddy around the house with his “bonk” or to play together in his “Bat Cave,” and, above all, snuggle with his Mommy. He loved wagon rides, Muppets, Curious George, zoos, and trips to the park to swing and slide. He cooked “blue ice cream cones,” colored with chalk, and played with his Moxie-dog, whom he insisted sleep at the end of his bed every night. Despite his illness, Odin played with instruments, sang songs, ran wildly pushing his toy cars, laughed, smiled, roared like a dinosaur, and brought joy to the people around him. Cancer weakened his body, but never slowed his spirit; he persevered through months of radiation, chemotherapy, and countless pokes, prods, and visits to doctors’ offices without losing his curiosity for the world. He brought light without casting any shadows, and will always be missed by those who loved him. A funeral service will be held for Odin 10:00am on Saturday, May 9th at Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the Catawba College campus with reception to follow on the 3rd floor of the Center for the Environment.
