Monice Elizabeth "Betty" Brown Williams

Monice Elizabeth "Betty" Brown Williams, 84, affectionately known as "Mimi" to her family, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 7, 2014 in Myrtle Beach, SC. She touched many people's lives and will be missed by her family. Betty was born on November 12, 1929 in Savannah, GA. to Robert Saunders Brown, Sr. and Monice Varn Brown. She grew up in Salisbury, NC. and graduated from Boyden High School and later Limestone College. She married her husband of 57 years, Robert Neal "Bob" Williams, Sr. on June 1, 1951. Shortly thereafter, they started a family in Salisbury, NC. Bob preceded Betty in death on December 14, 2008. Betty was a loving mother and wife. She instilled many values in her children, not the least of which was that failure was not an option and that success could be achieved through hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Upon retiring after 27 years of teaching in Rowan County schools, she and Bob split their time between Salisbury and North Myrtle Beach. They were also fortunate to be able to travel extensively with family and friends. Betty remained a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury until her time of death. Betty was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Saunders Brown, Jr. She is survived by two sons, Robert Neal Williams, Jr. ( Jimmie ) of Myrtle Beach, SC. and Bradley "Brad" Steven Williams ( Traci ) of Salisbury, NC; a daughter, Monice "Monnie" Williams Gerald ( Mike ) of Myrtle Beach, SC; five grandchildren, Michael Cornelius "Neil" Gerald, Jr. ( Amanda ) of Charleston, SC; Erin Williams Gerner ( Nick ) of Dallas,TX; Ryan Neal Williams of Murrells Inlet, SC; Courtney Elizabeth Williams of Salisbury, NC; Meredith Bradley Williams of Salisbury, NC; and one great grandchild, Merrian Elizabeth Gerner of Dallas, TX. The family would like to extend a profound debt of gratitude to Betty's caregivers, who over most of the last four years allowed her to remain in her home and lead a full and dignified life. Many thanks to Joy Couch, Judy Barnes, and Sybil Burrows. A funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 3:00 PM with Reverend Dr. Mark Conforti, senior pastor, and Reverend William H. Osborne, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services and will also gather following the burial at the house of Traci and Brad Williams, 232 Richmond Rd, Salisbury, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Bus Fund, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.
