Mary Katherine Schenk

Mary Katherine Schenk, 94, of Cleveland, NC passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. “Nanny” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild was proud to be blessed to see five generations. Mary was born August 4, 1929 in Barber Junction, NC at home. The daughter of the late Lonnie Thomas “Jack” Waller and the late Eva Curlee Waller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Junior R. “Jerry” Schenk on November 10, 1989; brothers, Jack J. (Dood) Waller and Charles T. “Charlie” Waller. Mary was a lifelong member of Lebanon Lutheran Church. Her grandpaw Waller would say “Duck come get on my lap so I can put your shoes on.” He then carried Mary to church. Mary taught Sunday school and was a member of WELCA. Mary loved flowers, gardening (especially planting tomatoes), watching butterflies and her bluebirds, and dancing. Mary kept many children in her home who loved her as their “Nanny”. She later helped her daughter at West Rowan Grill. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Jerry Alan Schenk (Linda) of Port Saint Joe, FL; daughter, Susan “Susie” Saine (Darriell) of Cleveland, NC; grandchildren: Crystal Watkins, Chad Saine (Jennifer) and Brian Saine (Kristin); great-grandchildren: Elizabeth “Danielle” Smith (Will), Noah Williams, Brock, Carson and Garrett Saine and great-grandson: William Smith, Jr. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins she loved. A special thanks to Dr. Raj Kumar Joshi and caregivers: Becky, Rev. Vaughters, Gloria, Debra, Fannie, Tosha and Ruth and the care team of Iredell Hospice: Bobbie, Tiffany, Shawna and Chaplain Teresa. The family will receive friends from 2-4 PM Sunday (Feb. 11) at Summersett Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 3 PM Monday (Feb 12) at Lebanon Lutheran Church in Cleveland, NC, officiated by Pastor John Tucker and Rev. Vaughters. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
