Marie Elizabeth Yarbrough Wood

Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Yarbrough Wood of Salisbury, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at Trinity Oaks at the age of 96. Marie was born July 8, 1928 in Rowan County to the late Lillian Ellen Hoffman Yarbrough and Charles Eugene Yarbrough. She was raised by her dear grandparents, Sally and John Hoffman. Marie graduated from Woodleaf School before attending Salisbury Business College, where she earned her associate degree. On July 20, 1947, Marie married Donald Jiles Wood, and they remained happily married for 77 years. Marie and Donald worked together for numerous years as Donald was a self-employed building contractor for over 40 years, and Marie assisted him with clerical duties. Marie, a talented seamstress and quilter, also taught quilting at Rowan Cabarrus Community College, Rufty Homes Center, and Markey Fabrics. In addition, Marie was a steadfast member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she was a lifetime member. She was active in the W.E.L.C.A, as she was a life member. Marie also enjoyed membership in the Salisbury-Rowan Quilters Guild and the Starry Night Quilters Club. As demonstrated by her life, Marie loved the Lord, her family, friends, church, and community. Her legacy of devotion to her family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed. In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Jiles Wood, and sister, Dorothy “Jean” Painter (Howard). Left to cherish her memory are children Donald “Don” Charles Wood (Renie) of Sylva and Diane Wood Howard (Robert) of Woodleaf; grandchildren, Dr. Lindsey Holloway Antosek (Steve) of Salisbury and Dr. Ashley Holloway Bowers (Scott) of Dothan, AL.; and great grandchildren, Maggie Antosek, Mary Grace Antosek, Lilly Bowers, Meredith Antosek, Ford Bowers, and Marshall Antosek. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00 am Tuesday, March 25th at Bethel Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am in the church sanctuary with Reverend Carroll Robinson officiating and Reverend Scott Faw assisting. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Road, Salisbury, NC 28144. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Wood family.
