Libby Helms Hurley

Libby Helms Hurley, 89, of Salisbury, entered into the arms of her Everlasting Father on November 20, 2022. She was born on April 27, 1933, in Cabarrus County to the late Homer and Mamie Helms. Affectionately known as Bibby, she was one of six children. Bibby lived an accomplished life. She worked in many industries throughout her career in Rowan County, which included Rowan Dairy, Fulton Pharmacy, Leisure Lads, Rowan Regional Hospital, and Southern Bell Telephone. Her passion and love for telephone switchboards began when she worked at Southern Bell. Bibby kept a switchboard in her home after all of these years, a special one from the Plaza Hotel in New York City. She was loved for her observations of the world as she saw them, often coined as Bibby-isms. Her house was full of coffee, conversation, and laughter with family and friends throughout the years. The holiday season at Bibby’s included legendary fried chicken and delectable desserts. No one enjoyed her company more than the love of her life for over 50 years, Jim Hurley. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to keep their cars between the ditches, a favorite quote used by her late husband. Bibby’s gifts and talents knew no bounds. She had a gift for sewing that allowed her to look at a dress from a magazine, memorize it, and make it with no pattern. Bibby is survived by her daughter Vicki Hurley Medlin of Salisbury; sons-in-law Timothy Medlin of Salisbury and Joseph McGraw of Huntersville, NC; sister Gail Austin (Ronald) of Concord, NC; granddaughters Alexandra Eaton Poole (Charlie) of Charleston, SC, Jessica Eaton Goodman (Nick) of Salisbury, Mary Beth Medlin Hefner (Rob) of Charlotte, NC, Katie Medlin Skaggs (Lee) of Waxhaw, NC; twin grandsons Timothy and Thomas Readling of Salisbury; great granddaughters Mary Masters and Brooks Goodman of Salisbury, Adelaide Poole of Charleston, SC, Eloise Manske of Waxhaw, NC; nephews Steven Austin (Melissa) of Concord, NC, JD Whitmire (Sandi) of Pawleys Island, SC, Michael Browning (Karen) of Salisbury; and great niece Stefanie Whitmire (Skip) of Pawleys Island, SC. She had several distant relatives located throughout the United States. Bibby was preceded in death by her daughter Mitzi Eaton McGraw (2021) of Huntersville, NC, husband Lt. James Leonard Hurley (2005) of the Salisbury Police Department, three brothers Homer, James, and Maurice Helms, and sister Julie Alice Helms. A special thanks to the exemplary staff at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House who provided compassionate care for our Bibby. Dr. Chetan Amin, Linda Hicks, Megan Plummer, Kelly Woods, Tamika Burns, Kim Bradley, and caretaker Deborah McLaughlin will forever hold a special place in our hearts. A graveside service will take place at Rowan Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 11 AM. Pastor Kenneth Lance will officiate the service. Rest in peace Bibby.
