Katherine Jarvis Stokes

Mrs. Katherine J. Stokes, 97, of Salisbury, NC passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at her residence. Born August 17, 1920 in Cooleemee, NC she was the daughter of the late Mary Katherine Thomason and June Franklin Jarvis. Mrs. Stokes attended Brevard College. She worked and later retired from Rowan County Social Service office as a secretary with Child Service Adoptions. Mrs. Stokes loved playing the piano and organ for First Baptist Church of Cooleemee before moving to Salisbury. She enjoyed working outside in her yard along with caring for her children and grandchildren and spending time with her grand-dog, Maddie. She often cooked meals for her family and other gatherings. She volunteered for both Meals on Wheels and Rowan Hospice and participated in various senior groups at Second Presbyterian Church and Neel Road Baptist Church. Mrs. Stokes is preceded in death by her husband, Hassel Stokes; sisters, Mary Alice Stokes, Ruth Tutterow; brothers, Paul Jarvis and Glenn Jarvis. Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Julie Gainer (Barry) of Salisbury, Anne Lashley (Benny) of Jonesboro, GA; grandchildren, Jason Gainer (Michelle), Josh Gainer, Colin Spencer (Adam), Amy Andrews (Justin), Allison Johnson (Richard), Kelly Clark (Brian), Julie Anne Haraway (Blake); great grandchildren, Sierra Andrews, Taylor Andrews, Hunter Andrews, Andrew Johnson, Ethan Johnson, and Andi Gainer. Visitation will be held Friday, August 10, 2018 from 1-2PM at Summersett Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 2PM in the Summersett Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hancock officiating. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to caregiver, Michelle Naylor; along with special friends, Mary and George Jones, Butch Gentry, Scott and Kathy Adams, Eleanor Peeler, Buck Cook and Shelly Manner for their loving care of Mrs. Stokes.
