Joyce Hunter Chappell

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joyce Hunter Chappell, 65, of Salisbury, NC on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at her home surrounded by family and friends. Joyce was born February 2, 1961 in Farmville, VA to Jean Keller Hunter and the late Ernest Ray Hunter. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, wife and a dear friend to many. Joyce attended Beth Car Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher who mentored and loved her kids. Joyce is survived by the love of her life of 45 years, Michael Lee Chappell of Salisbury, NC. Joyce and Mike were high school sweethearts who married in 1981 while Mike was in the US Air Force. Once the tour was finished they made their home in Halifax, VA for many years. Their most cherished memory was the day their son, Jonathan Daniel Chappell came into their life. She is survived by Jonathan and his wife Alysha who make their home in Granby, MA along with grandsons Beau Lavelle Chappell and Asher Lawrence Chappell. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister Brenda Snead Nelson and husband Brad of Summerville, SC and her brother Michael Ray Hunter of South Boston. Joyce loved all of her nieces and nephews dearly: Patrick, Michelle, Nat, Becca, Derek, Megan and Lauren. Joyce is also survived by her dear friend who was by her side for many years, Karen Perkins Fruend of South Boston, husband Walter, son Brooks and daughter Alyssa. Additionally, She loved many kids as her own to include Derek Anderson, Kelly Mundy and Josh Vaughn. Joyce battled cancer for 26 years with the support of her family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and church family. All who knew her will confirm that she was a fighter from beginning to end. A memorial service will be held at Beth Car Baptist Church, 25 Church Street, Halifax, VA 24558 on Saturday, August 1st at 11:00am with Pastor Thad Decker officiating.
