John Pete Cloer

John "Pete" Meredith Cloer, 77, of Collerville (formerly of Richmond, Virginia & Salisbury, NC) went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 17, 2011, with his loving family at his side. He was born August 15, 1934 in Salisbury, NC. Pete was known by his many friends and family members to be a devoted husband and father, an avid Duke Blue Devil fan and for his incredible sense of humor. Pete's Love of country and sense of duty prompted him to join the Navy, where he served on the USS Brown during the Korean War. Upon his return, he began his career at Owens-Illinois in Salisbury and married the love of his life, Christine Cottingham, who he leaves behind to cherish his memory. Through Pete's hard work and dedication to provide for his family, he quickly succeeded, eventually leaving O-I to work for Westvaco, where he spent ten years in various positions in Cleveland, Ohio, New York, NY, Sandusky, Ohio and Gastonia NC before leaving to join Chesapeake Corporation of Richmond, Virginia. Pete retired with Chesapeake after working in Erlanger, KY and Winston-Salem, NC as Vice-President of Manufacturing. Pete was proud of his accomplishments and the many mentored friends throughout his career, but his family was always the true highlight of his life's work. His greatest ambition to be a loving husband and father was achieved, and he leaves behind his wife, Christine "Cricket" of 56 years of marriage, his daughter Rhonda Klaas, who waits for him in heaven, and his baby, Lisa Schneider and her husband and best friend, Rick Schneider of Collierville, TN. He also leaves his two cherished and beloved granddaughters, Jessica Palmer of Yorkshire, England and Casey Meredith Schneider of Collierville, TN, two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Sophie Palmer, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Pete's mother, Corrie Cloer, brothers Gaither and Walter and sister, Norma DiFonzio precede him to glory. The family welcomes visitors on Wed., Sept. 21 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury, NC. Services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 at Summersett Funeral Home entombment to follow at Rowan Memorial Park. Pete's family wishes to thank all at Hospice for their loving care, and Elizabeth Babish of Comfort Keepers for her unwavering dedication and care.
