Joan Horner

With grateful hearts for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Joan Horner who peacefully departed on June 30, 2026 at the age of 88. Born February 4, 1938 in Port Jefferson, NY she was the daughter of the late Bertrand Louise Herbert and Philip Winton Townsend. She was a graduate of Colby Junior College in New Hampshire. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, NC. Joan was first and foremost a devoted Christian, wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and loyal friend. She shared a remarkable marriage with her beloved husband, Bill, building a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and unwavering support. Together they created a family that became the center of her life. As the proud mother of six daughters, her greatest joy was watching her family grow through generations. Joan had a generous spirit and embraced life with enthusiasm. She believed that serving others made a community stronger and generously gave her time through countless volunteer activities. Whether lending a helping hand, organizing events, or quietly supporting someone in need, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She also knew how to enjoy life to its fullest. An avid tennis player and enthusiastic card player, she treasured friendly competition, laughter, and the camaraderie of friends. Her calendar was always full, her home was always welcoming, and her circle of friends was wide. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel included, valued, and loved. Those who knew Joan will remember her warm smile, infectious laugh, generous heart, and genuine interest in others. She approached each day with optimism, kindness, and grace, leaving behind countless memories that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Along with her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husband, William H. Horner; son in law, John Stuber; brother, Skip Townsend. She is survived by her six daughters, Susan Stuber of Deep Gap NC, Nancy Campbell (Scott) of West Jefferson NC, Linda Trexler (Donald) of Bethel NC, Barbara Safrit (Steven) of Salisbury NC, Mary Ellen Haggard (Stephen) of Leavenworth, WA and Christine Smith (Douglas) of Bozeman MT. Eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and many treasured relatives and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and friendship. While her family grieves her loss, they also celebrate the extraordinary life she lived. Her legacy is one of love, service, friendship, joy, and devotion to family. She taught those around her that the greatest measure of a life is not found in accomplishments alone, but in the love we give, the friendships we nurture, and the lives we touch. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered. A memorial service will be held at 1PM on Thursday, July 9th at First Presbyterian Church in Lewis Hall. Her ashes will be laid to rest with her late husbands at Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Rowan Helping Ministries, 226 N.
