Mr Haywood Maxwell Cope

Mr. Haywood Maxwell Cope, 93, of Salisbury, NC passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at his residence. He was born August 3, 1921 in Rowan County to the late Paul Cope and Katherine Deadmon Cope and was a graduate of Spencer High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Haywood was employed and retired from the Southern Railroad as a conductor and worked for 45 years. Haywood was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church for over 60 years where he was an Elder, Sunday school teacher, Worship leader, and “keeper” of the grounds. He gave many hours to the community in volunteerism. Haywood co-developed the Crisis Assistance Network and became its volunteer director when it became a part of Rowan Helping Ministries. He managed the Crisis Hotline, served with Meals on Wheels, and in a Jail ministry. Haywood was awarded the Good Samaritan Award from the Salisbury Civitan Club and the 2014 Outstanding Senior Citizen Award by the Spencer/Faith JC’s. He was a member of the Rose Society and a Master Gardener. Haywood was a member of the Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth Trexler Cope who died July 21, 2013, and a granddaughter, Kristy Mills. Haywood is survived by daughters, Sabra Mills (Tom Smith), Salisbury and Heather Clement (Willie), Mocksville; son Haywood Cope, Jr. (Vicki) of Tampa, Fla; grandchildren, Haywood Cope III, Shane Cope, Barron Mills (Kristen), Adam Mills, Tripp Clement (Katherine), Rita Durner (Jon), Jeremiah Clement (Chasity), Kristen Clement; step-grandson, Austin O’Neil and 8 great-grandchildren. Visitation and Services: A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, January 3, 2015 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Kellie Browne, pastor. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. A private burial will be held for the family at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
