Mr. George Charles Wilber

George Charles “Jim” Wilber, 88 of Salisbury, died peacefully Wednesday morning, October 9, 2013 in the presence of his loving family and under the care of hospice. He was born April 13, 1925 in Chatham, NY. He was the son of the late Enos and Nina Belle (Baron) Wilber. A graduate of Chatham High School in 1942, he joined the Navy and served his country in World War II from 1942-1946. He married his adored wife of 62 years, Virginia C. Roberts in 1951 and together they raised a daughter, Chris and a son Terry in Voorheesville, NY where Jim ran a business, Concord Tree Service. Jim was active in the Chamber of Commerce in Delmar, NY , the Grange; the American Legion and the Mason’s in Jefferson and Richmondville, NY, the United Methodist Church and Meals on Wheels in Salisbury, NC. He belonged to several bridge clubs, and loved Sunday School and Bible Study. For many years, Jim played golf and skied. He won a slalom race in his late 40’s at Grey Rocks, Canada. He and Ginny traveled the world. They especially loved to visit Scotland. Together they hosted hundreds of gatherings of friends and family. A sociable and positive man, Jim had a lively sense of humor and loved to draw others into conversations. An excellent listener, he loved to make others laugh. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Ginny of Salisbury, his loving sister, Helen Golden of Chatham, NY, his daughter, Chris and her husband Richard Howard of Albany, NY and his son, Terry and his wife Jeanne (Bonanni) Wilber of Salisbury. He had many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was so proud of his 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who reside in the states of Washington, Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and New York. Memorial Service will be conducted 11:00 AM – Friday, (Oct. 11) at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Haines, officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. A Graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM- Wednesday(Oct. 16) at the Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd., with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that donations in Jim’s memory be made to Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care, 720 Grove Street, Salisbury, NC 28144 or the First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144
