Dorothy Lee Vernon Rendleman

Dorothy Lee Vernon Rendleman, 93, of Salisbury passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury. She was born July 5, 1925, in Cumming, Ga. to the late Odell Kimsey and Dessie Major Vernon. She was preceded in death in 1997 by her husband of 54 years, Dr. David Atwell Rendleman, Jr. Dot and David met in Atlanta, Ga. when David was a medical student at Emory University. Dot moved to Salisbury in 1944 to make her home with David’s parents while he completed an internship in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army in Missouri and Korea. She was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for 74 years. Dot is survived by her brother, the Rev. Joe Vernon (Phyllis) of Cleveland, Ga.; her children: Dr. David Rendleman (Mary )of Raleigh, N.C.; Dottie Kline (Harvey) of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Dr. Daniel Rendleman (Raymond Malo) of Atlanta, Ga.; and Paul Rendleman (Janette) of Salisbury; her grandchildren: Anne Blackburn (Bill) of Issaquah, Wash.; Kate Leslie (Brent) of Rocky River, Ohio; Kathi Gillaspy (Tom) of Falls Church, Va.; Ray Kline (Laura Coutts) of Wake Forest, N.C.; and David Kline (Ashley) of Mercer Island, Wash.; step-grandchild Talitha Mills of Burlington, N.C., and great-grandchildren: Ryan, Hunter, and Kate Blackburn of Issaquah, Wash.; Julia and Brynne Leslie of Rocky River, Ohio; Taryn, Shealyn, Aidan, and Fiona Gillaspy of Falls Church, Va.; Eva Marie, Sophia, and Gabriel Kline-Coutts of Wake Forest, N.C., and Luke and Cora Kline of Mercer Island, Wash. Dot was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Irene Brannon Anderson, Bud (Cleon) Vernon, Ivan Vernon, Clifton Vernon, Lynn Vernon, and Melba Castleberry. She is survived by her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Lorine Vernon of Loganvillle, Ga.; Marcus Castleberry of Alpharetta, Ga.; Grace Kirk of Salisbury, and the Rev. Henry Rendleman (Susan) of Hickory, N.C.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dot was the heart of her family. She dedicated herself to raising her children and to encouraging and supporting them as adults. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to have them around her. Dot helped her husband David in his medical practice for over fifty years. She was his answering service on the telephone at home when patients needed help and in later years worked in his office as his assistant. Dot knew his patients and their families by name and continued to take pleasure in meeting them around Salisbury years after the practice had closed. Dot loved the outdoors. She was known for her beautiful lawn and flower gardens, which she designed and maintained herself until she was past 80 years old. In her younger years, she was an avid golfer and seamstress. She loved to read and to watch news and sports on television. She especially enjoyed golf tournaments, the Atlanta Braves, and the Carolina Tar Heels. She loved to tell Georgia tales (stories about her growing up years in Georgia) and as well as stories about her Rendleman family. She looked forward to yearly family reunions with her Vernon family in Cumming and with her Rendleman family at Windy Hill Beach, S.C. She loved to host family gatherings at her home featuring her wonderful Southern cooking. The family would like to thank the staff at Trinity Oaks for the love and attention given to our mother during her nine years of residence there. The Rev. Laura Henrik will conduct a graveside service for the family on Friday, November 2, at 1 p.m. at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Salisbury to be followed at 2 p.m. by a Celebration of Life service in the chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury. Following the service, there will be a reception in Peeler Hall at St. John’s. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Oaks, 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.
