Dorothy Almond Maner

Dorothy Almond Maner, 83, of Colby Circle, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Born in Concord, NC on Aug 14, 1927, Mrs. Maner was the daughter of the late Henry Claude Almond and Nora Estelle Honey. A 1944 graduate of Boyden High School, Mrs. Maner retired in 1991 from the Salisbury City School System having served as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent for over 25 years and Secretary for the Board of Education. During her time with the School System, she served as District President of NCAEOP. She was a member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church and the Homemakers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Maner sang in the Chancel Choir for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group. Mrs. Maner was a former member of the Spencer Women of the Moose and the Salisbury Pilot Club. In the early 90’s she joined The Salisbury Singing Seniors. She had a glorious voice and love of music. Her home was always filled with her voice in song. She had a passion for her beloved North Carolina Cardinals and so enjoyed watching them from her sunroom each day. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Benton Thomas Maner in Dec of 2006, her sisters Jackie Earnhardt and Claudette Watts. She is survived by sons Tony Maner (Maria) of Salisbury, Randy Maner (Renee Lessner) of Salisbury, and Reggie Maner (Ken Howey) of Charlotte; grandchildren Heather Maner Taylor (Scott) of Mills River, NC, Randy Maner Jr. of Nashville, TN, Derek Maner of Salisbury, and Tesha Dunlap of Kannapolis. Mrs. Maner is also survived by her most precious 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. And her extended family Wanda Johnson and family of Richmond, VA and her “sister” in heart, Alease Cline. Visitation: The family will see friends from 6:30-8:30 Thursday at Summerset Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence. Service: A Service of Celebration and Remembrance will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday at the Summerset Memorial Chapel with Rev. Annalee Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Chestnut Hills Cemetery. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Donna Childress for her loving kindness and undivided care; caregivers, Tesha Dunlap, Lisa and Misty Wall, Esther Dickerson and Rowan Regional Hospice who made so many things possible especially the exceptional care Mom got.
