Betty Sue Mangum Whitman

In loving memory of Betty Sue Mangum Whitman Betty Sue, “Grammy”, a devoted mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at the age of 87. Sue was born in Salisbury, North Carolina to the late Henry Logan Mangum Jr and Susan Branch Mangum. She had 5 brothers, Henry (Hank), Jim, Bob, Bill, and Steve, and 2 sisters, Ann and Cathy. Sue grew up in Salisbury where she met the love of her life, Ray Gene “Whit” Whitman. They had two children, Kellie and Greg. She worked in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for many years, retiring to Huntersville, North Carolina to live next door to her son. Sue was the heart of her family. She was a spirited and extraordinary woman who was an amazing mother and Grammy. Her love for life, friends, family, children, grandchildren and all their dogs defined her. You could often find her at Showmars eating with her brother Bob and friends Carol and Henry Puckett. She loved the beach and enjoyed family trips with her sisters Ann and Cathy, and surprise visits by her brother Bill. The highlight of Sue’s life was the birth of her three grandchildren, Megan, Ethan and Jake. Her wisdom and advice over the years will always be remembered. She brought an infinite amount of love, happiness and comfort to her family and friends. She made the world a better place and we hope to do the same. Her legacy of love and kindness will live on in her children: daughter and son-in-law Kellie and Jeff Soots and son and daughter-in-law Greg and Danna Whitman and her grandchildren: Megan Soots, Ethan Whitman and Jake Whitman. We will hold a Celebration of Life at Showmars in Huntersville (9605 Sherill Estates Road) on Thursday, October 17 from 7:00-9:00 pm - Grammy’s favorites will be served. An intimate graveside service will be held at Chestnut Hill Cemetery on Friday, October 18 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Western North Carolina hurricane relief efforts or a charity of your choice. To Grammy “Goodnight, God bless you, We love you”.
