Betsy Lawrence Zentmeyer Wengert

Betsy Lawrence Zentmeyer Wengert, 91, of Salisbury, passed away on Friday July 28, 2023, at Trinity Oaks Health and Rehab. Mrs. Wengert was born on December 25, 1931, in Guilford County. She was the daughter of the late John C. Lawrence and the late Hazel Porter Lawrence. Mrs. Wengert was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and Greensboro College. She majored in mathematics and minored in music, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1953. Mrs. Wengert taught high school mathematics in Bassett and Richmond, VA public schools. She retired in 1987 from St. Catherines Upper School in Richmond VA where she taught Algebra I and II for eighteen years. She was the faculty sponsor of the Freshman Class giving special attention to the young boarders. Mrs. Wengert was an active member of First United Methodist Church Cape Coral, the United Methodist Women, 1959 Charter member of Va. Zeta Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators, transfer member of Fidelis Gamma, Richmond; and Gamma Zeta Chapter, Ft. Myers, FL. She held offices in all these organizations. Betsy loved music, reading, sewing and was a friend to all. Her favorite bible verse was Romans 8:28. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1995 by her husband of 41 years, Robert Leath Zentmeyer. Those left to cherish her memory is her husband of 24 years, Bruce Douglas Wengert, sons, Leath Zentmeyer (Debbie) of China Grove, NC and Larry Zentmeyer (Jeanne) of Kannapolis, NC. Five grandchildren: Jennifer Lackey (Brian), Jeremy Pfaff (Jenna), Will Zentmeyer (Josie), Lillie Kiefer (Matthew), and Abbey Zentmeyer all of the Charlotte, NC area. Three Step-grandchildren, Stephen and Christina Phillps and Cameron Graser of Bumpass, VA. Three great grandchildren Jude and Everly Lackey and Adeline Zentmeyer. Stepchildren, Bob Wengert (Melanie) and Liz Phillips from Richmond VA., Beverly Atchison of Bonita Springs, FL, Mark Wengert (Heather), Debbie Pannofina (Russ), all of Holland Patent, NY, and seven step-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 11 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The burial will be in Martinsville, VA on Sunday, August 6, 2023.
