Mrs. Jane Brown Shumate

Jane Brown Shumate, 81, of Salisbury, died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at her family home surrounded by those who loved her. The daughter of the late Alfred T. and Frances Harris Brown, Jane was born June 22, 1940 in Northfork, WV. She was educated in the W. Va. school system. She graduated from Marshall University, Huntington, WV and Catawba College, Salisbury. She was married to Melvin I. Shumate on September 2, 1960 and was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She always placed first the interests and needs of her family. She was a teacher in the WV School system where she taught the gifted and talented. She also taught in Rowan County. After retiring from teaching she worked for her husband’s business. She was an active and loyal member of First United Methodist Church where her leadership was valued. Her numerous activities included President of United Methodist Women, member of the Christian Forum Sunday School Class, and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of many church committees; the Methodist Women’s Circle and was a Girl Scout leader. In addition she was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Serendipity Book Club and the RRMCA Auxiliary. She was an extraordinary person, loving and caring, who touched the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be missed by all those who shared the joy of her life. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years. Three daughters Belinda Ann and her husband Alan Musso, Lisa Lynn and her husband Russell Vaughn, Susan Elizabeth and her husband Werner Brooks; eight grandchildren Marissa VanHeest and husband Taylor, Melanie, Jennifer and Joseph Musso, Erin Brooks, Zachary, Nicholas and Abigail Brooks; three great-grandchildren; Otto, Lucas and Ethan VanHeest; two brothers Alfred David Brown , and Michael Thomas Brown. A service celebrating her life will be held Sunday, August 22 at 2 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Mark Conforti officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. A private memorial service will be held prior to the church service at First United Methodist Church Columbarium. The family suggests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144 or Alzheimer’s Association.
