Hugh Lee Harkey

Mr. Hugh Lee Harkey, 62, of Salisbury, NC passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. Hugh was born February 17, 1950 in Rowan County to the late Clay B. Harkey and Clara Mae Beeker Harkey. Proceeding him in death, along with his parents, were brothers-in-law Tony Myers, and Walter Wilhelm, Sr., and sister-in-law Annie Wilhelm Dry. Graduating from West Rowan High School, Hugh began his employment at Fiber Industries in construction maintenance with Daniel’s Construction, Becon Construction, Mundy Construction Companies and continued there for 40 years. Hugh attended Christ Episcopal Church, Cleveland and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed the outdoors and being in the mountains. Hugh was meticulous about wood working and any other project he undertook. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, June Wilhelm Harkey, whom he married September 3, 1972; son, Jay Harkey and wife Amy of Davidson; daughter Leigh Ann Scruggs and husband Daniel of Woodleaf; grandchildren: Clay Harkey, Owen Scruggs, Alayna Harkey, Gaige Scruggs, Cade Scruggs, and Berkleigh Scruggs. Brother Luther Harkey and wife Ellen, sisters, Brenda Swink and husband Allen both of Salisbury, Libby Canupp and husband Gerald of Woodleaf; brother-in-law, Robert Wilhelm and wife Glenda; sisters-in-law, Jean West and husband Jim, Shelly Galloway and husband Mike all of Salisbury, Helen Kinley and husband Jimmy of Woodleaf; uncles George Beeker and wife Margaret of Lexington, NC and Coy Edgison of Mt Pleasant, NC and numerous nieces and nephews as well as cousins that he held close in his heart also survive him. A visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 PM Friday (June 1) at Summersett Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Saturday (June 2) at 2:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church in Cleveland, conducted by Rev. Candis Burgess. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.
